The Malaysian government has set an example for other developing countries to emulate, youth engagement and the development of young leaders has been give top priority from the top down. Which is important, as it has been widely recognised that for Malaysia to reach its development goals the development of the human capital in the younger generation is key.

“I want to be a billionaire so %$#*@ bad” perhaps sums it up. The song goes on to talk about how the guy will party in a different city every night. Could this be more further from the truth? Successful leaders tend to be defined by their work not by their ability to party. Unfortunately I don’t think that the song was meant to be an ironic commentary on the younger generations.

The next generation will have to deal with problems on a scale never seen before in human history, the simple maths of the population and its implication on the way most of us live keep many up at night. A quick review of the newspapers reveals the pressure to perform on the leaders of today in the political and corporate sectors, and yet the leaders of today are struggling what of the strawberry generation.

The strawberry generation raises many questions, defined as those born between ‘81 to ’91 as soft and easy to bruise like the fruit has been seen as an Asian incarnation of Gen Y, are they like this as they have yet to be put in leadership positions, are they not equipped to with the skills or do they have no inclination to step up to the plate. If this is the case who is ultimately to blame? The real question is what is the solution?

These issues and more will be discussed at Tomorrow’s Leaders Summit 2012 is themed “Education, Sustainability & the Future” will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 8-11 of November. For more information on becoming a delegate and meeting leading minds in this field visit www.TomorrowsLeaders.biz

With cities like London dealing with youth rioting in the streets, and countries like Spain dealing with 40% youth unemployment, there is hope yet, as many young leaders and students from around the world struggle with issues and other issues a group of students in Malacca, Malaysia has set a shinning example of what to do.

The students in the International Business department of the Multimedia University have organised a conference themed “Striving for Environmentally Sustainable Economy”. “We wanted the students to get real life experience” stated Tan Khai Heng, the Director.

“I was happy to speak at this conference, the students continually followed up with me and made sure everything was in order” commented Dr. Rohani a youth expert from Malaysia. “I was impressed by the level of involvement of the students at MMU, I can see that there is a group of young leaders being developed there” stated Nordin Abdullah. “When we were in university we would not dream of being able to create such an event and the fact that they raised the RM 18,000 (apx.USD6, 000) required to organise the event is a real credit to the organisers.”

It is no wonder that Malacca also boast the head quarters of World Assembly of Youth, several universities and is the first state to reach developed status in Malaysia some 10 years before vision 2020 while recently being listed as a world heritage site. The Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ali Rustam has continued to prioritise the youth and the development of young leaders with several events being hosted in the state each year which bodes well for the future.

Professor Douglas D Osheroff, Nobel Laureate

A world reknowned speaker and one of the the leading scientists of our time, his ability to make science accessible and relevant to each and everyone of us will set the tone for this year’s Summit, which is themed “Developing High Income Youth”. Delgates will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with Professor Douglas during the Keynote Session on 19th March, 2011.

“How Science Changes Our Lives” – Prof. Osheroff has chosen this as his topic for the event. This is a very public lecture, not just for a scientific audience. In it the Professor will show how our ability to develop new tchnologies has vastly benefitted mankind, but that it has also posed a serious dilemma in that mankind has placed an enormous burden on our environment in order to deal with the by-products of our energy production and factories and the growth of the human population.

Professor Douglas Osheroff is also an avid photographer and will be able to take in the sights of Sarawak including the Sarawak Cultural Village and Semolok Orang Utan Sanctuary during his stay in Kuching.

Abstract: Our understanding of Nature (which is what science is all about) has allowed us to better understand and control powerful forces in Nature for our benefit, such as the conversion of heat in to mechanical and electrical energy, communications via propagating electromagnetic waves, etc. Biology has given us a much better understanding of life, and medicine has allowed us to live longer and more productive lives. However, often these new capabilities produce unwanted side-effects, such as the global transmission of new diseases, the pollution of our environment, and a growing human population that has strained our natural environment in many ways. While all this is true, thanks to science we live more comfortable and meaningful lives than could ever have been possible a thousand years ago, and our ability to harness Nature has given us the time and ability to better understand our environment, our universe, and even ourselves.

SARAWAK youths who constitute about 42% of the population are more interested in music and sports than in politics.

Social Development and Urbanisation Assistant Minister Larry Sng said a youth survey carried out between February and July last year showed that only one quarter of respondents were interested in the political developments of the country.

Nonetheless, they were well informed on current developments in the country and overseas through the social network, newspaper and television, he said.

“Less than a quarter are interested in general news, a quarter in business and a quarter in Sarawak Corridor Of Renewable Energy,” he told a press conference in Kuching yesterday.

Earlier, Sng announced that the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry in collaboration with Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) would hold this year’s state-level Youth Assembly on March 18 at the centre at 2pm.

Some 5,000 people are expected to attend the event themed “Build the Future on the Present Success”.

Various activities would be held from now on in every district that will lead up to the culmination of the assembly that would be declared open by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The highlight of the assembly would be the presentation of awards to youths in recognition of their work or social involvement, he said.

“There are eight awards namely Anugerah Ikon Belia, Anugerah Jasa Belia, Anugerah Belia (Sukan), Anugerah Belia (Kebudayaan/Kesenian), Anugerah Belia (Kemahiran), Anugerah Persatuan Belia Cemerlang, Anugerah Belia Wira (Tani Penyelamat/Nelayan/Penternak) and Anugerah Belia OKU,” he said.

Sng said supporting events such as those aimed at instilling the spirit of volunteerism and community work would be held at 8am on March 5 in Padungan, Kampung Bintawa Hilir and Kampung Jinok near Kuching.

He said a new youth recreational centre at Kuching Civic Centre would be launched at 8am on March 12. The facility is meant to get more youths into activities such as cycling, wall climbing, basketball and futsal.

On March 19 and 20, the ministry in collaboration with Glen Reagh Sdn Bhd would hold Tomorrow’s Leaders’ Summit to expose youths to business opportunities and how to strive to create a high income society, he said.
